The ending of the siege of the Kwieres Air Base.

.Both sides are reporting a major, albeit fragile victory for the Syrian Government forces and allies in the Aleppo countryside, the site of the largest Syrian offensive conducted since the Russian intervention began.

The Kweires Air base had been surrounded and besieged since 2013, Around 3oo troops remained in what was an island in an ISIL controlled area. Syrian Government forces have now broken the siege destroying the insurgents positions surrounding the facility in what appears to be a major achievement.

Iranian media are reporting that the commander of the Revolutionary Guards Quds force Qasem Soleimani .is leading the assault on the ISIl forces in Eastern Aleppo. this is a clear sign that they believe the operation will succeed as the image and prestige of the commander are clearly important to them.

“Unconfirmed reports said the groundbreaking victory was gained under the leadership of Iran’s renowned Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani.”

This marks possibly the first major achievement since the Russian Iranian escalation of October.

Meanwhile in the Western region oif Latakia, the heartland of the Syrian government support, insurgents have massacred dozens of civilians in mortar strikes.

Al Jazeera described the events.

“at least 24 civilians were killed and 57 others injured by two rocket shells that landed in residential areas of the coastal city of Latakia, quoting local police.

The observatory put the death toll at 23 civilians, adding that at least 40 others had been injured in the attacks. The rockets landed near Teshreen University.”

Jabhat al Nusra and the other jihadists routinely conduct these punitive massacres against civilians in Government areas when they face defeat on the battlefield. It is one of their trademarks.

Syrian Air Force bombard Douma- more than a dozen civilians killed.

Like the rebels. Syrian Government forces frequently bombard positions held by the other side with scant regard for civilian deaths and injuries.
