The Liberation of Aleppois Imminent Following Insurgent Collapse.

In one of the most stunning developments in the grinding five year war, 40% of the insurgent pocket has been lost in the space of 48 hours. Following the Syrian army capture of the Hanano district the entire northern sector of the insurgent pocket collapsed, thousands of civilians have fled into the Government sector and the twin myths of the popular support for the insurgents and the malevolence of the government towards the people have been instantly extinguished.

Every one of the avalanche of lies have achieved nothing but to discredit the source.

The BBC humilit=ate themselves with childish, farcical lies as is their custom.
The BBC humiliate themselves with childish, farcical lies as is their custom.

The civilians who have been able to leave tell very consistent stories about being used as human shields, being extorted large amounts in order to be allowed to leave, tyrannical religious edicts, hoarding of supplies and the mining of escape routes and firing upon any who try and escape.

The jig is up but the propagandists will continue droning on, they know no other way and are so mentally ossified that they are incapable of honest reporting even if that became their intent.

There was never a local uprising in Aleppo, what happened was that tens of thousands of fighters were infiltrated into the city via Turkey in 2012 and the locals were not consulted for a moment. The insurgency was simply imposed upon them.

The survivors of the siege are clearly bedraggled and somewhat fearful but the overwhelming emotion is of relief. These men tell the same story dozens have told about being used by the insurgents in the most cynical manner imaginable.

Syrian Battlefield Journalists Explain the Situation to the Jihadists….

In Syria there are two journalists named Rabea Kalawandy and Sohayb Masri who travel around to the recently liberated areas and celebrate Syrian victories whilst taunting the jihadist insurgents. Rabea is the bald guy at the far left and Sohayb is the fellow to the right of screen with the white keffiyeh around his neck, Rabea is the hard man whilst Sohayb is the one with the wisecracks. The videos are posted at Rabea’s twitter account, but only in Arabic.

The collapse of the jihadists in the northern sector of eastern Aleppo gave them an opportunity for an epic and classic video taunting the insurgents who have done so much damage to their nation. The complete video is embedded below.

When militants in Syria make an agreement to evacuate an area where they are facing total defeat, the government sends green buses to drive the fighters to insurgent held Idlib. For the east Aleppo insurgents there are now only two choices, the green bus or the grave.

When the fighting in Aleppo ends, as it will do within the coming weeks at the latest. The war will be over for control of Syria’s major cities, the war will continue in Latakia/Idlib and the Aleppo countryside to the west as well as Hama, Homs and Deir ez Zour to the east and a much smaller war in the south of the country but within months Syria may be able to begin rebuilding the core state. The insurgent defeat in Aleppo is going to mean the end for the insurgency in the major Syrian cities, the insurgency will become more of a nuisance at the edge rather than a threat to the existence of the state.

The end is now in sight, Syria has survived the worst that NATO and the Gulf States could throw at them short of open war- including dozens of airstrikes from Israeli and US coalition aircraft, and they have survived.

Syria, the army and the people deserve the credit but it is telling that whereas Saddam’s Iraq and Qaddafi’s Libya had no real allies willing to lift a finger in their defense, both Iran and Russia have made massive sacrifices in support of Syria and that has made it completely impossible for the plot against Syria to succeed as the previous regime change/state destruction operations had done.

Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey, President Obama and even the British Labor party and Parliament deserve a modicum of credit also for resisting another demolition job in September 2013 after the massive chemical weapons false flag was supposed to close the deal.

Without the US air force the insurgents were never going to win, but the billions of dollars of military aid from a host of nations and steady influx of duped foreign fighters via the Turkish border made it impossible for the Syrian Army to prevail prior to the increased Russian and Iranian assistance of late 2015.

Many thanks to ANNA News for their reporting on the ground, which has provided almost all of the imagery used in this piece and many others.

It is clear after months of intense fighting that the insurgents lack the military tools to break the siege. They have repeatedly thrown hundreds of fighters into the fray for little or no long term territorial gain.

Syrian Victory in Aleppo now Inevitable.

In late October insurgents outside the Aleppo city pocket made what now seems a final desperate attempt to break the siege. The offensive caused a great deal of damage, saw the insurgents take a high number of casualties and kill many civilians and achieved no territorial gains at all.

After the offensive the insurgents hold considerably less territory than before it started.

The encirclement and impending loss in Aleppo have inspired a welter of hysteria and an avalanche of propaganda from the Western media.

Evil knows no boundaries! So desperate did the Western propaganda become as the regime change project faced defeat in Syria and the insurgents in east Aleppo were surrounded and besieged, they invented a fake young Syrian girl, placed her in east Aleppo and had her demand World War 3!This event hopefully marks a nadir and a beginning of the end for the age of deception.
So desperate did the Western propaganda become as the regime change project faced defeat and the insurgents in east Aleppo were surrounded and besieged, they took a “young Syrian girl”, gave her a twitter account and had her demand World War 3!

This has brought us many wonders in the field of lies but it is hard to surpass the fake twitter account with a  seven year old girl calling for World War 3 . There should be an award for lie of the year, and that should be a contender.

Although to be fair, the widespread pretense that the more than one and a half million occupants of Government held Western Aleppo city do not exist and are not being killed and wounded in large numbers by the indiscriminate shelling of the insurgents was also an impressive and audacious lie (of omission as opposed to commission) propagated almost across the board by our wonderful media.

Endgame.

The fighters inside the pocket are incapable of any meaningful offensive operations and the fighters outside the pocket cannot break the siege despite throwing absolutely every possible resource towards the task over several months.

All insurgent attempts to break the siege of the eastern Aleppo pocket having failed, the insurgents are going to have to accept defeat in the Battle of Aleppo in the coming days and weeks.

There will be no total victory in the conventional sense, the Syrian army and their allies are not going to seize east Aleppo by force or kill every insurgent in the pocket, rather they are going to force the insurgents to accept a deal that will see them relocated by the government to insurgent held Idlib. Identical deals previously saw insurgents evacuated from Homs city, Daraya and in recent days the town of Khan al Shih in the Western Ghouta area of the Damascus countryside and their departure from Aleppo will end any meaningful insurgent presence in Syria’s major cities and with it any hope of regime change in Syria.

 Aleppo Encirclement Restored.

After a month of fierce resistance the insurgent defensive positions at the Aleppo military colleges collapsed on September the 4th following a day of dozens of Russian airstrikes and a two-pronged ground assault on their positions conducted by the Palestinian/Syrian loyalist militia Liwa al Quds and the Tiger Forces of the Syrian Army.

Such was the intensity of the fighting that it is as though winter has come early in the area of the military academies as the battles have blown all the foliage from the branches of the trees.

If nothing else the insurgents deserve respect for forcing the Syrians to destroy the colleges and surrounding buildings in order to displace them.  and while loyalists crowed that the insurgents had “Lost 1000 fighters in order to deliver three watermelon trucks!”both sides took heavy casualties in a month of some of the most intense and violent urban combat of the entire war.

The restoration of the encirclement of the insurgent pocket in east Aleppo and has triggered a predictable and laughable barrage of propaganda from the pro-insurgent media in their desperation to save the doomed jihadists in Aleppo city..

There is something indescribably sad about this bullet scarred mural at one of the Aleppo Military Colleges. It is almost a metaphor for all that Syria has lost over the past five years and provides a glimpse into a shattered past.

East Aleppo Under Siege.

The supply line through Ramouseh was never truly reopened, due to the intense fighting taking place and at this point it can be stated definitively that the Ibrahim al Youssef offensive failed in its objectives, and the insurgent claim that they were going to seize all of Aleppo city has now been rendered absurd, and while the carve up of northern Syria is now underway, the core Syrian state will survive and Aleppo city will be included.

They hold only one minor regional capital, Idlib and any realistic view of the regime change effort would accept the fact that this effort has failed and has been the major cause of the immense and continuing suffering of the blameless Syrian people.

The insurgents are going to lose in Aleppo, just as they were defeated in Homs, Darayya and many other former strongholds and with the loss of Aleppo all pretensions towards the insurgents playing a major role in the future of Syria, much less of achieving victory. will be gone.

Once Russia became heavily involved in the conflict, the regime change project faced a choice between defeat and war with Russia, and so desperate were the empire’s minions to maintain their supremacy many favor the military option, war with Russia on behalf of Al Qaeda, it makes perfect sense!

Chlorine.

The groups fighting the US military in Iraq began using chlorine gas bombs in 2004. these groups conducted dozens of attacks using the gas, but abandoned the tactic because of its ineffectiveness. Chlorine gas is very rarely deadly,”or as Wikipedia describes it “have proven not to be a viable means of inflicting massive loss of life. ”

Chlorine bombings in Iraq – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Syrian Armed forces have access to a virtually inexhaustible supply of high explosives and the systems to deliver them onto a target. Sometimes they use napalm, sometimes the Russian Air Force uses phosphorous and other incendiaries. These weapons are both far more terrifying and effective than any chlorine device that has ever been constructed. The idea that anyone with access to these ferocious munitions would resort to the use of the nuisance value chlorine is a joke.

Incendiary munitions airstrikes on targets in rebel held parts of Aleppo

Anyone who is capable of rational thought will see that the only party with any motive for launching chlorine gas attacks are the insurgents.

After Syria gave up its chemical weapons stockpile in the wake of the East Ghouta false flag attack of August 2013, it was no longer possible for the insurgents to commit mass murder with Sarin and blame it on the government in the hope of causing the US to enter the war and bomb them to victory.

But the insurgents still needed to find a lever to provoke the US to act as their air force so in their desperate position they have resorted to conducting small-scale attacks with Chlorine gas and blaming them on the Government.

These claims are not worthy even of contempt but the Western media embrace them without question, still seeking to fulfill their master’s goal of regime change in Syria and willing to tell any lie, support any evil to make it happen.

The Death of the UN.

Recently the UN even chipped in with a report blaming the government for these attacks, on the basis of eyewitnesses who claimed the chlorine was dropped from helicopters.

Despite the fact that pretty much every airstrike that takes place near a populated area in Syria is filmed, no-one has ever filmed any of the helicopters supposedly responsible for the dozens of such alleged attacks.

This Robert Parryarticle provides an excellent analysis of this issue:

UN Team Heard Claims of ‘Staged’ Chemical Attacks

The fact that the UN released a report supporting this brazen, low and despicable narrative merely indicates that the UN itself is an entirely bankrupt and worthless organisation, something that has been obvious for many years.

U.N. Admits Role In Haiti Cholera Outbreak That Has Killed Thousands : The Two-Way : NPR

“The ongoing Haiti cholera outbreak is the worst epidemic of cholera in recent history, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.[5] After the 2010 earthquake, in little over two years, as of April 2013, it has affected has killed at least 7,000 Haitians and sickened a few hundred thousand more while spreading to neighboring countries including the Dominican Republic and Cuba.[6] Since the outbreak began in October 2010, more than 6% of Haitians have had the disease.[7]” (Source)

It goes without saying that no-one within the sick parody that is the modern-day UN was held responsible for this act of momentous incompetence that has led tot the deaths of thousands of Haitian civilians.

If the professional liars responsible for that nonsense think they are fooling anyone with an IQ above room temperature they are in for a rude awakening.

The Syrian Army and their allies have played their part, they have done their job, now it is incumbent on those outside Syria to destroy the reprehensible propaganda edifice that will seek to prevent their victory in Aleppo.

Massive Strange Explosion in Southern Aleppo.

The Syrian city of as Safira, 25kms/16 miles south of Aleppo city was struck by a series of massive explosions overnight, the blasts took place at a large Syrian military production and weapons storage centre on the outskirts of as Safira.

Massive explosion rocks Army base in southeast Aleppo

The blasts were photographed 50 kilometres away and witnesses 60 kilometres away in Azaz claimed to have felt the blasts. The blasts created a mushroom cloud and there is a strange pulsing flashing in some of the footage. Several witnesses that the blast resembled a nuclear event.

Several tactical nuclear attacks of recent years have targeted weapons storage facilities, both in Yemen last year and in Syria in 2013, the choice of these targets for small scale nuclear attack enables a high degree of plausible deniability on the part of the perpetrators.

It remains unclear what has taken place in as Safira but whatever the origin there appears to have been a nuclear explosion and the unbelievably idiotic story promoted by certain pond life level propagandists that a helicopter carrying “tonnes” of explosives crashed and caused the explosion rather gives the game away.

It is highly unlikely that an aircraft could have delivered a missile to this site deep inland without being detected but a missile fired from a submarine or some other platform is entirely possible.

Initial images of the explosions in the defense plants in the city of as Safir.

Other Examples.

In the past several months the Russian Air force have unleashed a number of horrific new weapons on the jihadists of northern Syria.

There have been some very strange explosions caused by the Russian Air force during that time and this attack, from April again on an ammunition dump, in this case belonging to al Nusra in southern Aleppo is very, very reminiscent of a nuclear blast.

This year, Saudi Arabia through proxies informed the world of their possession of nuclear weapons This was already an open secret as in 2015 Saudi Arabian air attacks on Yemen were unmistakable small nuclear explosions.

In 2013 Israel made it even more obvious when they attacked a Syrian military research site near Damascus at night when the unique character of the explosions are far easier to identify.

The Context of the War the SAA Cut the Castillo Highway.

Despite the Russian intervention the war is still a grinding battle of attrition however this week the Syrian military and their allies managed to cut the Castillo highway that runs in a semi circle north of Aleppo city. The achievement came after weeks of heavy fighting and terrible casualties on all sides.

The Castillo highway was the sole supply route for the rebel fighters who control eastern Aleppo city. The closure of the road has seen a series of frantic rebel counterattacks in order to reopen the road but these attempts have failed and at such a cost that one of the major factions Ahrar al Sham (Free men of Syria) have stated they will not send any more fighters to participate in what they see as a suicidal effort to reopen the essential supply line.

Russian jets swarm northern Aleppo as jihadists attempt to retake Castillo Highway

Pictures have now emerged of the Syrian Army on the road but the fierceness of the fighting was such that the initial goal was not to take the road but to take positions with artillery ranged upon the road making it impossible for the insurgents to use it. The Syrians achieved this from two separate areas and this is the vital thing.

Hell Awaits the Serial Liars Along with their Death Squad Mercenaries.

You can always tell things are going badly for the jihadists because that is when the war party and their proxies begin complaining about human rights and expressing concern about human suffering.

When the pet maniacs they are still psychotically pretending are freedom fighters run amok and enter a village and commit mass murder, these unprincipled and morally bankrupt propagandists have not a word to say about it. It is good news to them, their “lads” are winning.

al Nusra Front claim the SU22 was shot down with a ZPU anti-aircraft heavy machine gun.

Orient News (better known as Al Nusra television) have conducted an interview with one of the fighters involved with the downing of the Syrian jet this week. The masked al Nusra fighter claimed that the jet was struck by a 14.5 anti-aircraft gun.  The fighter is referring to a weapons system popularly known as the ZPU which consists of either two or four machine KPV heavy machine guns, often mounted on the back of vehicles. It is classed as anti-aircraft artillery. These weapons are very common in Syria.

Hilariously Orient News tried to claim that the warplane was bombing civilians, yet the al Nusra fighters boast completely refutes this pathetic propaganda claim because if the claims are correct the proscribed terror group were operating heavy weapons in the area, the shootdown and the Nusra claim make it clear there were legitimate military targets in al Eis this week.

Syrian Jet Downed in Aleppo-Pilot Captured.

A Syrian Air force Sukhoi Su22 jet has been shot down in southern Aleppo in the vicinity of the town of al Eis and the pilot has been captured by the jihadists of the al Nusra Front.   Tel al Eis has been the site of heavy fighting in recent days after insurgents launched a major offensive in southern Aleppo that saw them seize control of the small southern Aleppo village that government forces seized from the insurgents last November as part of their  Aleppo offensive.

The downing of the Su22 is the second Syrian Air Force jet lost in the past several weeks, in mid-March a MIG 21 was downed in Hama province, one pilot ejected but another died after unsuccessfully attempting to land the damaged jet. The cause of the SU22 downing is unclear but the MIG21 appeared to have been attacked with a portable SAM missile or MANPAD.

There is speculation that these jets may have been downed by new surface to air missiles provided to the insurgents by their sponsors however an examination of the history of the Syrian war shows that these latest incidents do not represent a significant departure from what has taken pace throughout the war.

Possible Implications.

According to the highly respected US journalist Gareth Porter the current partial ceasefire in Syria was due to a secret deal between the US and Russia. Under the purported deal Russia would restrict their bombing attacks to al Nusra and ISIS and in return the US woulkd convince their allies in Saudi Arabia and Turkey to completely stem the flow of weapons to the rebels.

Cutting Off Syrian Rebels’ Weapons – Consortiumnews

Events on the ground over recent weeks have supported the claims made by Gareth Porter;there has been a dramatic decrease for example in the use of anti tank guided missiles by the insurgents recently, with the dreaded TOW missiles –one of the major offensive weapons in the insurgents- all but disappearing from the battlefield in recent months.

Until the cause of the SU22 shoot down is ascertained specualtion is premature but if an entity or a state have been providing the likes of Jabhat al Nusra with surface to air missiles that could scuttle that deal and see a renewed escalation of the Russian role in the war.

In all likelihood iin this case the insurgents  got lucky on the back of a careless pilot but these are worrying signs that the nightmarish Syrian war may be nowhere near conclusion.

The Liberation of Palmyra.

Civilisation triumphs over the forces of nihilism, chaos and destruction.

The US Air force stood, watched and did nothing in May 2015 as the city of Palmyra fell to  ISIS.

Ten months later and Russia has emerged as the defender of civilisation in Syria and nothing makes this clearer than the liberation of Palmyra.

While the US was perfectly happy to stand back and watch Syria being looted and pillaged by the forces of chaos and mayhem, Russia sent her soldiers  to fight and die in the fight against them and they have succeeded.

While ISIS clearly made a tactical decision to withdraw from Palmyra and Tadmur this week, the group are still present in the area, still well armed and still capable of mounting successful small-scale attacks.

The Western “Response.”

Reporting on the liberation of Palmyra, the BBC World Service were reduced to offering the pitiful “many blame the Syrian Government for allowing the city to fall.”

It is worth remembering that fewer than two years ago the Western elite and their pet media were trying to present the Russian President, with a straight face, as the new Hitler.

This now laughable idea was actually a very popular meme throughout 2014 being voiced by Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton, the British Prime Minister and the next in line to the British throne, among many others.

The hollow men and woman of the Western media supported these fallacious pronouncements as they do everything, with mindless enthusiasm and transparent sophistry.

The southern outpost of the Mighty Wurlitzer took to the task with shameless relish.

So these latest developments are another self-inflicted moment of acute humiliation for the self appointed masters of the universe.

In this light the muted, sulking and whining response to the Russian operation in Syria and the Palmyra triumph make perfect sense.

The past two years have been among other things one long festival of humiliation for the Neoconservative Western elite, much of it at the hands of the Russian President. This must be a difficult moment for them.

In the Daily Beast they were still droning and whining about moderate rebels, in an unintentionally comedic piece written in the parallel universe of the Western propagandist where al Qaeda are moderate democrats!

Putin and Assad Score a Major Victory Against ISIS, After Hitting Syrian Rebels for Months – The Daily Beast

To describe the al Nusra Front are a terror group is a simple statement of fact. This is their legal status as designated by the UN along with their parent organisation al Qaeda.

al Nusra front deserve the designation having conducted terror attacks that target civilians in both Syria and Lebanon where the “plucky moderates” sent a suicide bomber to commit murder in a Tripoli cafe in late 2014.

Nusra Front claims Lebanon suicide attack – Al Jazeera English

They have massacred numerous groups from whom they differ including Shia, Christian and Druze. They have desecrated Christian churches, they have conducted chemical weapons attacks against both military and civilian targets. The only meaningful ideological difference they have with ISIS is that they believe in building an Islamic State in Syria after the war ISIS have tried and failed to do so during the war.

Any “journalist” who attempts to portray the Syrian opposition other than ISIS as being moderate is either a brazen liar and fraudster or simply a tool who deserves to the same contempt they have for their audience.

Al Nusra are the pivot group of the entire Syrian insurgency, throughout the war they have been allied with militant factions across the board and were the core and spearhead of the Army of Conquest coalition that swept through north-western Syria in 2015 seizing the province of Idlib.  Jabhat al Nusra have maintained alliances with the supposed moderates of the Free Syrian Army throughout the entire war.

The Road Ahead.

The Syrian Army are in the process of de-mining Palmyra, removing the hundreds of bombs and booby traps placed by the guerrillas, other units have fanned out in several directions and although clashes continue in the Palmyra area it is expected that the Syrian Army and their allies will soon  begin to move further north-east as they follow the M7 highway towards Der ez Zour.

Der ez Zour is 200kms away through a desert of sparse villages. If ISIS choose to mount guerrilla raids on the advancing forces it may take them months to advance across the desert.

On the other hand if the group withdraw the Syrian Army could be fighting to break the siege of Der ez Zour within weeks. If recent history is any guide it will be many months.

Palmyra victory has Syrian Army set to break ISIS siege on Deir Ezzor

If the Syrian Army manage to cross the desert and link up with the forces besieged in Der ez Zour, the current episode of the Caliphate project will be over. The forces in Syria will be reduced to operating in small isolated pockets of territory.

Amidst the deafening silence, the obfuscation and barefaced lies, Robert Fisk of the Independent stood out as one Western journalist willing to state the truth about Palmyra and the West.

Why is David Cameron so silent on the recapture of Palmyra from the clutches of Isis?

“So in the end, it was the Syrian army and its Hezbollah chums from Lebanon and the Iranians and the Russians who drove the Isis murderers out of Palmyra, and who may – heavens preserve us from such a success – even storm the Isis Syrian ‘capital’ of Raqqa. I have written many times that the Syrian army will decide the future of Syria. If they grab back Raqqa – and Deir el-Zour, where the Nusrah front destroyed the church of the Armenian genocide and threw the bones of the long-dead 1915 Christian victims into the streets – I promise you we will be silent again.”

Russia Announces Withdrawal of its Military from Syria.

On the eve of UN brokered peace talks, the Russian Government has made the shock announcement that they will  withdraw the “main part of their military grouping in the Syrian Arab Republic” beginning immediately.

The statement from the Kremlin does not say how many of the Russian Aircraft and troops will be withdrawn from Syria nor how long it would take but it has already started.

FIRST VIDEO: Russian warplanes leaving airbase in Syria

This is a very strange turn of events when it is considered that Russia was sending more warplanes to Syria less than a fortnight ago. South Front reported in early March that Russia had just sent several extra aircraft to the Syrian base and provided an updated inventory of the Russian Airforce in Syria.

What Forces does Russia have in Syria?

The Russian Air force has stationed almost 100 aircraft in Syria, the estimates for the number of Russian troops in Syria range between 5 and 20,000. Whatever the number, Russian forces have not played a significant role in ground battles.

Officially, the Russian military have suffered three deaths during the Syrian operation, two on November 24th last year when Turkey shot down the Russian SU24 aircraft and another soldier died in the rescue effort and a soldier who died earlier this year as the result of a reported ISIS mortar attack.

There were also credible reports that a car bomb attack in Latakia claimed by Ahrar al Sham had killed at least ten Russian soldiers in late February.

The story disappeared but there were people on both sides telling neutral sources it happened.

Motives.

The Russian decision comes as a shock as they are a vital element of the loyalist coalition that is midway through several major operations.

The motives for this decision will become clear over time but it seems that Russia has decided to put its will towards ending the war in Syria.

It is possible that Russia is attempting to send a message to their Syrian Government allies that they must be flexible in their negotiations with the opposition.

In recent days the Syrian Foreign Minister stated that the status of the Syrian President Bashar al Assad was not up for negotiation. It is possible that Russia would like to see Assad and coterie head into exile as a way to end the war.

Future of Bashar al-Assad remains ‘red line’ as Syria peace talks begin

Russia has tended to be at least one step ahead of Western observers in recent years so only when we see what happens next will Russia’s intent become recognisable.

There are three obvious possibilities.

  1. This is a ruse designed to bolster the Geneva talks and Russia’s international image.
  2. The US and Russia have made a secret deal regarding Syria’s future that will end the war.
  3. Russia wants Bashar al Assad to leave Syria and is trying to make Assad understand that he must yield to the demands of the opposition and leave power.

My understanding is that Russia is perfectly happy to see Assad leave as they understand that the demand for his departure is merely an excuse for the destruction of Syria via a continuation of the war, their priority has clearly been the survival of the Syrian state and the Syrian army, under whatever leadership. If the war could be ended by his departure, in an orderly way it is highly likely that Russia would request that Assad leave Syria.

Brief Summary of the Military Situation in Syria.

International Military Review – Syria–Iraq, Mar. 14, 2016

A Cessation of Hostilities?

Around one hundred small insurgent groupings chose to participate in the partial ceasefire. The cessation did not apply and was never intended to apply towards either ISIS nor the local al Qaeda franchise the al Nusra front. Another large grouping Ahrar al Sham chose not to participate in the cessation due to the fact that the al Nusra front, their close ally, were excluded.

Ahrar al Sham says no cessation of hostilities while Nusra is being attacked : syriancivilwar

Therefore the only insurgent groups of any significance to participate was the Jaish al Islam, largely based in the outer Damascus area and the Southern Front coalition of insurgents fighting in the far less active southern parts of Syria.

On paper it seemed then that the cessation of hostilities would make little difference but the fighting has been sharply reduced in the fortnight since implementation and Russia has been helping to negotiate a series of local amnesties and ceasefires, building on a tactic the Syrian Government has been using for several years and that has seen insurgents allowed to leave many areas including Homs city.

Since the cessation began anti Government demonstrations have resumed in the rebel held areas but they are neither large nor enthusiastic. On the weekend an attempt to hold a pro-democracy rally in Idlib backfired badly when the “democratic’ protesters were attacked by Islamists advocating the implementation of Sharia law. The overwhelming desire of the majority of the people appears to be for the war to end and be able to resume their lives.

The sooner it is over the better, but the problem of al Nusra, ISIS and their sponsors is not suddenly going away, even if the Americans decide to call it a day, there are strong indications that neither Turkey nor Saudi Arabia would follow the advice or direction of the US.

Besieged Der ez Zour and Conclusion.

Thousands of Syrian troops and hundreds of thousands of civilians remain encircled by ISIS in the eastern city of Der az Zour and although ISIS are on the path to total collapse in both Syria and Iraq, without Russian air support it is hard to see the Syrian Army liberating Palmyra and defeating ISIS and al Nusra in Syria.

The attempt to end the war is admirable but this will not solve the problem of al Nusra and ISIS each of which retains significant territories within Syria.

It must be assumed that Russian air strikes will continue in Syria for many months at the very least with a scaled down presence conducting a smaller campaign.  Anything less would be a betrayal of all they have achieved up to this point.
